Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I stop in my 89 at a stop light.  The temp immediately jumps to above 210
to 225.  When this happens my oil pressure drops to 4-6 on gauge. Cold it is at
50+, I have replace oil pump with a melling high volume/high pressure pump
and no change.  I even tried a 165 thermostat, no joy. Any ideas?

Your problem is not the pump. The engine has internal wear, either rod or main bearings have large clearances and it gets worse as the oil heats up, because oil looses viscosity when hot. Replacing the thermostat with a colder setting will help a little but once you ramp speed up, oil pressure drop pressure again. How many miles on it?

You may have a worn engine but I would first have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge so that you know for sure what is going on. The problem might just be a bad oil pressure sending unit.
