Need helpful info on my 87 IROC 350 rebuild

Asked by yzfrblue Feb 22, 2010 at 01:23 AM about the 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I hurt the engine in my 87 IROC with a 350 vin code 8. I didnt put a hole in the block but it has a main bearing noise and a possable rod knock. I dont have a lot of money and i want the car to live again with more than 225h.p. What is the best thing i can do?. If any of you camaro lovers can help me please email me at yzfrblue@yahoo.com Thanks

The fastest and easiest way check your bearings is to drop the pan while the motor is still in the car. Put it on a lift or blocks etc and youll be about to tell if the bearing is worn and at the same time you can check the play in your rods to make sure they arent broken or what not. who knows, it might only be main bearing making all the noise and it would be an easy fix.

If you have a lot of miles on the motor, make very sure you look at the crank and mic it for excessive ware. If it shows wear, I suggest you get the crank turned, new bearings, and do a lower end re-build. That is the cheapest way to go. The better way to make sure you have a safe engine is to pull it and have it gone thorough. If you have a worn crank, odds are your cam needs turning or perhaps a new one. Check on a fresh rebuilt one or a crate motor. You'll need to do the heads, and make sure the heads are flat. Best get a rebuilt for the cheaper bucks, but the best way really is either pay for a tear down/rebuilt or crate motor on trade in.
