Are smart cards safe?

Question type: General

I know they talk about the "cage", but my concern is that while the cage may protect the car, would a passenger still be toast?

Hi Bellini, The cage does hold up surprisingly well in a collision, but you are right, the passengers may not fare so well. Follow the link below to the smart videos and you will see a crash test of smart fortwo. fyi, that car is the European version/ old version. I think the newer one gained 2 inches in length. There are 2 video's on the following page, one is the crash test, and the other is a lengthy test drive. http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/v-2008-fortwo-c8319 Enjoy.

When the smart came out in europe (1998), a german car magazine let it crash with a mercedes benz s class. the result was surprisingly good, the passengers survived in both cars with minor injuries. the only problem on the smart where the cheap wheels, one rim was breaking, and the spokes where where blocked in the tarmac, so thats why the car fell on the side. (you dont have the problem with using steel rims or wider wheels then the standard ones) here are two links to official crash tests for the new and old fortwo: the old one: http://www.euroncap.com/tests/smart_city_coupe_2000/29.aspx the enw one: http://www.euroncap.com/tests/smart_fortwo_2007/303.aspx and the new smart is 7,6771654 inches longer then the former one. (19,5 cm)
