My speedo stopped working after going through a huge puddle of water and a
while after that a warning light of a car with a spanner came on. Could the eater
have caused this damage?

Yes, the water caused the electrical problem now it seems you have a DTC code computer knows the speedometer is none functional.. NO signal, most likely a VSS issue connection or VSS destroyed. Simple fix and not to expensive.
