Best commuter SUV?

I'm looking for an SUV for commuting to and from work, that handles the snow
and doesn't kill my budget in terms of gasing up.

A smaller Subaru such as the Impreza gives good fuel economy and AWD. The next step up in size would be a Forester, RAV4, Escape or CRV. Don't buy any Nissan with a CVT!
