98 Ford Windstar

Asked by Barbara Brad Jan 31, 2018 at 05:20 AM

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It's stalling out and dying when you try to
start back after driving, but going up a hill it
started clicking/knocking lost powered and
died completely and wouldn't start back. It's
overheating when you accelerate and if you
stop and put into park it will cool down. Heat
on but blowing out freezing cold air. This
thing is driving me crazy
Just replaced a starter two weeks ago and
it's been fine until a couple days ago and
now this. Please help I'm almost 37 weeks
pregnant with five babies already and our
car is dying on us!!!

You write "Clicking/knocking" and "lost power", which sounds like the engine has a lot of wear, and the noises could be from the valve train and lower end. In addition to the engine not cycling coolant properly, I'd have to wonder if this engine isn't on it's last legs. If it has excessive wear, lost compression, and knocking, it may not be worth saving. Give the engine a compression test, a leakdown test, and possibly test oil pressure. If it fails, it may be due to a bad head gasket, bad timing, and/or wear on rings/valves. I'd start looking for a replacement vehicle. A 98 Windstar with a bad motor isn't worth a plugged nickle.
