Do I need a steel pipe going from the engine to the filter instead of the black flexible one that's on it now? Just worrying because the air filter is touching the hose for the fan. Thanks for the help

I see you installed a filter in the engine bay. Now you will be sucking in hot air instead of cool air that the OEM filter provided. You might need to reduce the length of the rubber hose so it's isn't touching the radiator hose. It will wear a hole in it in short order. Might want to put a put a piece of plastic in-between. Fab up something for now.

Would I be able to get a metal pipe instead of plastic and reduce then length of it?

What car is it? You might be able to get a metal pipe to move the filter closer to the front of the car with a metal bracket to surround/shield it from the engine. It's called a Cold Air intake.
