I recently purchased a 1999 Dodge Durango, SLT with manuel 4WD, that doesn't work. The chain linkage had eaten through my transfer case. If I remove the front driveshaft, will this keep the chain from turning and making that awful grinding noise? I can't afford a new transfer case right now.

See photo.  Will the chain stop turning if I remove the front drive shaft?

You will have to deal with the transfer case as the power for the rear wheels goes through it. Without oil in the t-case it will self destruct in a mile or two.
