The Ford part number (according to www.tascaparts.com) for the 2002 Explorer 4x4 with a 4.0 V6 transmission is 2L2Z-7V000-BARM and the part number for the 4.6 V8 model is 2L2Z- 7V000-DARM so they are different. I would say no they won't interchange unless the part numbers are the same. Even if the transmission will bolt in there are electrical connections and computer programming to deal with. Getting it rebuilt would be the best course of action.
