What has happened to my MR2 Spyder

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So, I let my friend drive my Toyota MR2 Spyder with the SMT transmission and needless to say it didn't end well. When hoping on the interstate he put it in 6th gear when we were only going around 45 miles an hour and before I noticed what he had done we had smoke coming from the engine compartment. We managed to get the vehicle home but now it will not get above 35 miles an hour and doesn't have the power to make any movement in reverse gear. It smells of burnt breaks which makes me think that it may be on the clutch end but I am no expert. Really need help with this because I am stumped on what to do.

I have one of these- and I love it- but you have to know how to drive it- I only take it to the Toyota dealer and I made sure the mechanic who works on it knows how to drive it- the complexity of the system scares me- I downloaded the service bulletin and that scares me even more- next time I'll buy a 6 speed- but as long as it works correctly, it is sweet- having said all this, the clutch does need changing every now and then- find someone who knows what the hell they are doing or you will be in trouble-
