Got a new battery for my ford expedition and my battery light still on.
Check to see if the serpentine belt is still on and working properly. Next step is to have the charging system tested. The alternator or the wiring may have an issue.
A battery light is not an indication of a bad battery but that the charging system is not functioning. As you did not state a year most of these turn out to be a bad alternator but some newer systems are computer controlled and that just opens up a new can of worms to get sorted out, is it the alternator, computer, voltage sensor or wiring. And no you can't unhook a battery cable with it running, this can cause a power spike that can and does fry electronics. Safest bet is to have a shop check it out.
You can check alternator voltage with a voltmeter on the battery and car running. See if it is below or above range of your vehicle.
