There are many things that can cause the engine to run hot. 1.) check the coolant level. Is the overflow tank full (there is a full hot and full cold line)? 2.) When it runs hot, do the cooling fans come on? The electric cooling fans should turn on (you can hear them) when the engine gets hot. 3.) Has the coolant been changed or flushed in the last few years? A clogged radiator can cause overheating. 4.) Bad Thermostat? they sometimes need to be replaced.

Do what Gary says and...does the system have air in it? Pressure test it for leaks? Test fans, disconnect negative battery cable and put 2 wires to fan and put on each battery terminal. Fan should run instantly. Test coolant temperature sensor? If good and fans are good, you could have a bad PCM because some control the fans.
