is it safe to list vin # on Cargurus?

Yes, and you should otherwise the buyer won’t have a way to verify the vehicle’s history data. It’s not the same as giving out sensitive personal information like a social security number. While the VIN is unique for each vehicle, there isn’t much anyone can do with a VIN number. Honestly on some vehicle the VIN might be directly accessible if you walk up to the windshield sticker. Plus you are already driving around everyday with your license plate on the car.

Yes, I believe it would definitely be safe to list your 17 digit VIN on this or any other site. To get a vehicle history report from places like lemonchecks.com or Carfax, you need to have the VIN # in order to perform the search. This is part of the reason why I said it’s safe — that you need not worry about it; as the majority of used car dealers nowadays not only list the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the car itself - but also on their website where they display their inventory. They do so that you may use it on one of the websites mentioned above in order to run your VIN check and retrieve your vehicle history report. VINs became mandatory on all vehicles manufactured after 1981. They are more so a means to track a car for insurance & theft purposes, odometer reporting, title information, sales & ownership, accidents, etc. Every vehicle manufacturer places the VIN in certain areas of the car, but mainly in 1 of 3 places and sometimes all 3. I’ll try to find the auto history report infographic that shows you how to locate the vin number on an automobile by showing where to look — & I’ll add it to my answer here below. I hope this helps clarify some things for you & increases your used car knowledge! Cheers ;) Chris Lemon Checks
