How many universals are on the front of a 97 jeep laredo

took jeep to shop was told universal had to be replaced for 266 bucks when I came back the owner said his mec. had not checked other universal and that one had to be replaced to for 500. First time using this shop just checking that everything is on the up and up Thanks for any feed back

Your Jeep 4x4 will have one front drive shaft and one rear drive shaft. Each of those drive shafts will have a universal joint at each end. Hard to believe a "mechanic" would not check both universals when deciding what to replace. And yes, his rates are pretty high. And why would the second universal cost twice as much as the first on? It's basically the same task, parts and all. I would be asking for a itemized list for BOTH universal repairs. Something doesn't add up. Not trying to start trouble but I would be very unhappy with that shop!

U joints are not that expensive. Shop around. Drive it in 2WD until you get it fixed.
