Truck starts and idles rough for a few
seconds and then sputters and dies what
could it be?

Start by changing out the fuel filter. Then check for vacuum leaks. The engine may need a tune-up. Have someone adjust the carburetors idle mixture screws, clean up the carb, and adjust.
