selling a car to a private party and we sign over the title and remove the license plates what does the new owner do for a temporary plate until he gets to the DMV

It you had personal or special plates then yes you remove them, otherwise the plates go with the vehicle. You are protected when you enter the release of liability form. Make sure you get the buyers drivers license number. You can enter the information online at https://www.DMV.CA.GOV


That's not true in all States. Check with your State's Division of Motor Vehicles. In New Jersey, for example the seller must remove the license plates and either transfer them to their new vehicle or surrender them to the Division of Motor Vehicles. It's the buyer's responsibility to get new license plates when they title and register the vehicle in their name. HTH. -Jim
