Short block is just a rebuilt block. What do you want to do, put your uses heads on a rebuilt short block? That wouldn't be wise unless you get the heads refurbished. A long block comes with the heads refurbished and attached to the rebuilt block. You take your old intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, put a new oil pump in it, your oil pan and valve covers on the long block.
