(1) If the covering house of the Timing Mechanism is made of separated plastic material, then the engine has Timing Belt. (2) If the covering house of the Timing Mechanism is actually an integrated portion of the engine body, and it is therefore must be made of Metal, then the engine has Timing Chain.

Civics, 2006 and newer don’t have a belt, they come with a timing chain, and does not need to be replaced.

Most likely back to 1973 the civic had a timing belt. Then by 2003ish some SI models had chains.

Most people don't know where to look for the "covering of the timing mechanism". One must keep that in mind as they are not like some of us where we can raise the hood, take a quick look and have the answer in about 5 seconds.
