GMC Envoy getting bad gas mileage

Question type: General

So I bought this used 02 4.2l GMC Envoy SLT. It has 160k
on it and I wanted to buy a small SUV that could get me
16-20 MPG. They usually get 16-19 according to previous
owners, and on my electronic rating it says there's an
average of 17.4
The car holds 18 gallons but I can only go about 200 miles
on one fill up and I don't understand why. (I'm not much of
a car person AT ALL)
Can someone give me an idea of what to do? I have
college next year and I have to go 40 miles a day total for
it and I'm 17 and can't afford it.

If this is city driving don't expect to get any where near 20 mpg. If economy is important get a Honda Civic. A tune up and filter change might help a little but probably not that much.

Even a small SUV with a 4 cylinder engine may not get 20 mpg in heavy stop and go.

I'm not expecting to get 20 in the city. I usually am driving 35-45 whenever I go somewhere that's not on the highway. I need it to actually average 16-19 and not get 11 overall.

I think you have the wrong vehicle for your needs. Even new it would not get that mileage in the city and now it has 160,000 miles on it.

Do you have over sized tires on it? if so that can cut your mileage a lot.

Sell it. It's not known for good gas mileage. Honda pilot, jeep liberty, Ford escape... Google best mpg SUV. LetGo and OfferUp have many used (good) vehicles on there right now and you should still be able to get a fair price on yours before you rack up too many more miles. Do it before winter gets closer also. Prices will go up! Hope this helps ;)

I recently bought a 2006 Envoy for 4K, then put 2k into it, I love this car, it is gorgeous, sunroof, leather is clean, gps ipo8...…….the 2k I put into it was for the emissions, new tires....the engine is clean and perfect plus since the emission upgrades (rid of old crap), this car flat out flies but the mileage sucks SINCE, are you ready (I would not of offered such until I read your issues/resolves/etc), the mechanic took the tires psi from 22 psi to 40 psi 45 days ago.....….I just checked the psi, it is 22...…...thanks for the info...….oh,I will take the car to a local mechanic to validate...…..the owner was awesome, his staff was pathetic...……..
