Check your state's motor vehicle bureau website for fees. Most states charge the going sales tax to transfer a title, along with a set fee ($15-18 on average) for the new title. New plates are another fee (~$75). If you're buying from a dealership, they may have their own fees or they may require you to pay for a temporary tag through them. Temp tags by the state tend to be around 18 on average but I see dealers charging about 30 for them. Then there are those spurious made up fees dealers love to tack on just because they can - "lot fees," "invisible rust proofing," loan origination fees" etc. Most of those fees are just invented for the sake of taking more of your money, and get slipped onto any loan paperwork so you don't realize you just got had. If you pay cash, you should really only be paying for the sales tax, title transfer and new tags.

Check your DMV for the fees they charge when registering a car. Anything other than the state required fees and taxes is BS.
