auto transmission slips when it firsts takes off from a stop and shifts and runs fine when going. Can it be fixed will it get worse?

It always gets worse, check the trany fluid level after the vehicle is all warmed up, pull the dipstick while the engine is running to check the level. Still a problem then you would have to go to a trany shop to see how bad it is.

Hmm, it's an old 22 year old VW.... figures. VWs have terrible quality control , but, hey, it's more than 20 years. They've pretty much discontinued dipsticks on automatic transmissions for some time. You could just retire the car. Depending on where you live, the government will pay you up to $1,000 just to have the car off the road and destroyed. I would consider this and using the money on something more reliable. I'm thinking Asian car....Forget European cars, they're problems.
