In Illinois you pay taxes when you license and title the car at the DMV. We usually purchase automobiles in Indiana, and just pay the tax in Illinois. I believe that is true in all states pay where you register the auto.

Yes - you pay the sales tax rate for your home state.

I heard today if you live in SC and buy in Ohio, you have to pay Ohio your SC TAX by law, then they send you your $500 back in about a month with a title in your name. That's crazy but it's one of 7 states Ohio law requires you to pay to Ohio. I've even seen a document to that effect. And what's with the title. Are they sending me an official SC title after that 30 days? Who knows about this?
