I would only accept a cashiers check from a local bank or cash. Also I would ask to see identification such as a driver's license and write down that information. Some forms of payment can be easily forged, so be careful.

A loan would have to be paid off. You will then receive a lien release from your lender. A title can not be issued to another party while there is a lien against the vehicle in your name.

NO, do not EVER accept a cashier's check, not under any circumstances, not now, not ever. They are stolen by the truckload, widely available to any back alley crook, and are easily counterfeited. They are the simplest way known to man to steal a car. And titles are not signed with a notary either. There is no place to notarize it. Meet the buyer at your bank, do the transaction inside, and accept cash only.

A cashiers check on a local bank can be easily be checked out and is fine.

a "bank-issued certified check" is a good form of payment when selling a car. Before you turn over the title, you can call the bank listed on the check, to verify that that particular check is legit.
