Motor swap on 1996 subaru legacy gt

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 Subaru legacy gt with the 2.5/5 speed. The trans mission
just recently started acting up and the rear main seal went out. I do not
want to pay for the work on something that has 220xxx miles.. I have a
1996 Subaru legacy outback with a good 2.2/5 speed and 180xxx miles.
Would I be able to put the motor and transmission from my 96 into my
98? Both cars are complete and have all the wiring... 96 is just rusted
out.

Going through all that work and expense to install an engine with nearly 200,000 miles on it does not sound like a great idea to me. Paying to do it does not make sense at all.
