What hatchbacks are best for winter driving?

Good questions, Tom. I'm looking tor an automatic transmission (never learned tio drive manual), hoping to spend less than $10K. Four cylinder engine preferred if only because this generally = better fuel economy. I live in the city (Boston), so I'm hoping to find a relatively small car that will still handle well in snowy conditions. A few makes/models I've researched so far that look promising are: Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe. I almost bought a Kia Rio hatchback from someone on Craigslist; it sounded pretty sweet but someone else bought the car before I could schedule a test drive. I've heard some good things about Kias, but I'm flexible. Some older Subaru hatchbacks may be small enough (eg Outback "sport"?). Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much!
