How does a 24yo female find a vehicle that's good for the mountains and easy on the pocketbook?

I really need a new car, but I can't
seem to find a happy medium. At
some point I'm going to have to
sacrifice "something," so I can afford
a vehicle. (This something being a
specific trim for another, gas mileage,
etc.)

I live in the mountains, so 4WD/AWD
is a necessity, especially for snow. I
like to spend time outdoors, so I
need something rugged and ready to
get me where I want to go. I like 4-
Runners, Grand Cherokees, but they
all seem pricy.

I need someone to tell me exactly
what to do and look for. There's a
plethora of experts out there, and I
want to hear from y'all.
