4x4 issues And maintenance

I own a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel 2008 4x4 with
26000 miles on it have had to use my 4WD
couple times and for some reason the 4WD
won’t kick in till the rear tires are spinning
           CAN SOMEONE HELP ME

I am not familiar with your trucks options. Do you have AWD or automatic 4wd? If so this could explain the problem.
