This is a somewhat common problem on older cars and can be avoided by regular tune-ups that include proper cleaning & repairs. The leading cause for an engine sputtering & shaking is faults in the fuel system, worn out fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, dirty or defective injectors, and this can expel raw gasoline and cause misfires. leading to damage to the catalytic converter. Have the fuel system tested and repaired.
