OD/DRIVE slipping in my 97 Z28.

I have a 97 Z28 LT1 package and
today on driving to AA,and with
cruise set @55 it started slipping.  
No WARNING.  Just started
revving and making a whining
noise like a turbocharger spooling
up.  What's wrong and about how
much $$$$? Now I have no dr/OD
once I hit above 55

First thing to check is the transmission fluid. When you pull the dipstick when the car is warm and on a level surface with engine on, is the level between the cross hatches? If so, the transmission probably needs a rebuilt. The are around $2500 on average. How many miles on the car?
