Transmission 06 ford escape

Ford escape 2006. When we put it in reverse after
its been running for a bit it wont till cooled down.
Now while running it, it stopped moving and just
revved high and wouldn't go into any gear at all.
What could be the issue.

Sounds like a faulty torque convertor to me or other internal issue with the transmission. I suspect the fluid wasn't changed in regular intervals? Is the fluid black and or dark red? Have a transmission shop diagnose the issue, worse case scenario is a transaxle rebuild.
