Ford Escape when did they switch from being 4x4 to awd

I want to be able to switch myself to 4x4 and not have vehicle decide

The Ford Escape was always AWD, but the older models did have a switch to turn it on or off. 2001 to 2004 model years. They removed it in 2005 because owners would keep it activated when you didn't need it adding unnecessary wear to the drivetrain.
