Safe in what way? Talk to your banker about acceptable forms of payment. Meet in a public place such as in front of a police station and take a friend. You can have AutoPay as an intermediary if you like.

Seller has a lien and I don't want to have any surprises. Website info say Cargurus will offer protection, but was just hoping for some reassurance from a past customer who did this.

I recommend you do the transaction at the lien holders office. This way you are assured that they get the money and the loan is paid off.
