Is the car legal on the streets of USA

I’ve been reading and some say that the
1996 Nissan 180sx Type X is illegal in the
United States, is this true?

This would be a grey market car in the USA. It may be possible to make it legal in the US as the same basic car was sold here as the 200SX.
