Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I crank my 99 ford explorer sport with
a 4.0 sohc water shoots out of the radiator
like a fire fighters water hose I just replaced
fan clutch and serpentine belt put a rubber
freeze plug in on the back top of the motor
when I was driving down the road it start
making a noise like a stick stuck under the
truck dragging on the road then shut off
that's when I had to fix the freeze plug
thinking that was it I filled the water back to
the top and cranked my truck and that's
when water shot out and hit my buddy in the
face it was hilarious but I wanna be positive
it's the head gasket or if I need new water
pump

Is there a radiator cap on the radiator? Coolant is going to be pushed out of engine by the water pump through the upper hose into the top of the radiator, then it flows through radiator to the bottom hose and back to the water pump. If the radiator is blocked or gunked up, the coolant has no where to go when it leaves the upper hose. I'd check for blockages, check the hoses and reservoir as well. If all that checks out then you will want to run a compression check for the head gasket.

KenF the cap was off at the time I cranked it should I put it on and try again? If that doesnt work most likey head gaskets and tennisshoes all my brothers and dad say the same thing
