Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We just got the car almost 2 and 1/2 weeks ago have been without a vehicle for 5 years and when we got the sonata no light were on until now. we have not been in a crash or nothing so i do not see why a light would be on when nothing has happend.

Probably just a faulty sensor. Could be the sensor in the seats is off and it thinks that someone is either there or not there when they are. So it think that person is not safe and it doesnt know what to do, either to engage or disengage the airbags. Take it back and get it scanned and fixed. Preferably the dealership if it's a new car and under warranty.

if this is a 2006 they have a recall for the sensor just take it to the dealer and they will fix it for free

is it just 2006 that they recalled? Because mine is a 2003 and the light came on one day and will not turn off, and the warranty is gone.

Could be a faulty sensor, would be a good idea to get that check out soon as possible because if you get into a acccident the air bags will NOT deploy. Get it scanned at your local parts store and post the code here.

The 2002-2005 body style Sonata had issues with the connectors for the side air bag having bad connection causing high resistance codes. Connectors run underneath the seat and can be bumped by stuff getting pushed under the seat. Sometimes the harness needs shifted a little bit to lessen the tension on the connectors.

I thknk Hyundai has a real issue here. We have a 2005 Sonata and after about the first year (we got it in Oct '04) we've had trouble with the air bag light being on. We've had it in the dealership at minimum 4 times in the past 5 years for this and they have NEVER been able to correct it. Twice now we've had trim fall off the car, and have had to have a new power anteana motor replaced twice. All these issues are continual and don't seem to be able to be corrected while under warranty, coincidence? NOW they want $325 to replace the trim that fell off and $450 to replace the antena motor. I will never buy another Hyundai.

I have a 2007 Sonata and the airbag light came on 3 months ago. I took it to the dealer and they said there was a recall on the passenger airbag. They removed the passenger seat and sent it to CA for the repair. They also gave me a loaner car. This was all covered and there was no cost to me. In addition, with reference to one

We have a 2006 Sonata, the air bag light needed fixed 4 times since we bought the car new. Now it came on again but now we have 103,000 miles, it's not covered under warranty now. I'll never buy a Hyundai again.

I'm only owner of 2002 Sanata and airbag light came on 2 years ago, around the time I rescued a bull terrier pup, and she road in front seat of car all the time. When puppy reached 15 or 20 pounds, I noticed the airbag light started going on and off intermittently, then eventually just stayed on. My son worked a summer intern job at a major automaker in seatbelt engineering and safety prior to graduating from college; and found could be issue below. The puppy riding in front passenger seat set off sensor warning that passenger does not meet the minimum weight and or height requirement, and airbag could cause passenger seriously injured including death. It is meant to remind parents to buckle small children in the back in child safety seat. I now buckle 80lb puppy in back seat for both our safety; but airbag light remains on...

I have a 2011 Sonata and the airbag light is on. The light on the driver side dash is on when you start the car, and then goes off, but comes back on when car is running. Was there a recall for this year 2011 too?

Got a 2007 Hyundai Accent SE. Same problem as everyone here. Airbag light. What pisses me off of the dealer "fixed" this issue 4 years ago when the system was under warranty. Now I'm convinced they just cleared the code. At 110,542 miles there's no warranty. Plus having issues getting it smogged here in Cali. IF ANYONE IS GOING TO FILE A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST HYUNDAI FOR STAMDING BEHIND THEIR VEHCLES AND PUTTING PEOPLES LIVES AT RISK LET ME KNOW. I'll sign up in a heart beat. (Assuming I'm not killed in an accident 'cause my POS didn't activate its airbags.

I have a 2012 sonata and the airbag light would not go off. The Loma Linda Inland Empire dealer said it was a clock spring and it will cost 340.00 to replace it.

I did not get it fixed. They said bag may not work if in accident. SEAN said it will not release for no reason while driving.

I have a 2011 and had the same issue with both the airbag light staying on and the passenger seatbelt light flashing. I was able to get it fixed by taking it into a Hyundai dealership with certified Hyundai technicians. This was a few months ago, so I don't recall what the part was called, but it was definitely some kind of sensor they just had to replace. They also told me some of the older vehicles were having issues with the wires getting tugged on when moving the seat back and forth (although that was not the issue with mine). My car was still under warranty so it was a free service too.

Same problem with my 2011 Sonata! We need to report this so they issue a recall. This could be deadly and we have been quoted $900+ to fix this continuous problem. Please everyone, report the problem so they issue a recall and fix it for all of us! https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

I have the exact same issue with my 2006 Sonata. I have just gone to the https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ website and posted a complaint. My airbag light is illuminated and seatbelt light blinks on the passenger side. I took it to the dealer this past Saturday and was told it would cost me $1200.00 dollars to get it repaired. They said I would have to get my seat cushion replaced and the part alone is $1100.00 plus labor it was going to be over $1200.00 to repair. I am extremely angry that this was not covered by a recall. I sure hope enough people file a complaint that Hyundai issues a recall and covers the cost. I won't buy another Hyundai. My son owns a 2003 Honda Accord and it is sure a whole world of difference in the way Honda treats their customers as opposed to Hyundai. Honda has a recall on their airbags and has consistently called and mailed my son numerous notices to get his car repaired under warranty at no cost to him. Honda cares about it's customers and Hyundai does not.

I had this same problem with the airbag light. They told me it was a sensor under the seat and if it happens again they may have to replace the seat. I do not know if there is a recall though.

2007 Sonata here. Seat belt light would come on after starting, then stay on. I'd jiggle the wire harness under driver side seat and it would go out. Jiggle method doesn't work anymore. Light status on continuously now.

When you open the driver's side door, there's a panel that covers the fuse box . There's a 10 Amp A/BAG IND ( Air bag indicator ) , Pull it out and you're done. It should be the second one from the second row next to the blue 15 Amp one. Just read the panel box. Good Luck.

If you pull the A/BAG IND fuse out, the airbag warning light may go out, but your airbag system is deactivated, right? Doesn't solve the problem.

I have a 2011 Hyundai sonata limited and the airbag sign won't turn off. I have taken it to the dealer and they want to charge a lot to just look at the issue before they will tell me what is wrong. I see several people have complained about the same issue. There need to be a recall for it.

Ugh! Having the same issue. 2007 sonata, no longer covered, dealership said $125.00 just to look at it. Really?!. BUT I read on NTSB about an investigation into this issue and it said and I quote "This action will extend the warranty coverage for this issue for 15 years or 250,000 miles, which ever occurs first" My code was B1706 buckle pretensioner resistance too high. I am going to attempt to call the company. Wish me luck!

I am having the same issue. I bought a fault code reader for ABS and it didn't pull a fault code although the red airbag light is on. I'd hate to have to pay a small fortune for someone to tell me to clean the sensors under the seat or something.

Thanks, I just called the dealship and She told me that they would charge $120 to diagnostic check. If it is under warranty, then those fees will be waived. if not, I have to pay. I will search online to see if there is any recall for that.

I brought my car at the end of 2013 it is a 2011 Sonata. After getting some clicking noise fixed in my Sonata sometime in June of 2017 ($325) my airbag light would not go off. I go back to the dealer a week after they fixed my steering wheel and they tell me it will cost $170 to have it looked at. I didn't have a problem with it until they fixed my steering wheel. He tells me it's another recall on the seatbelt that they will fix but not the airbag light unless I pay the diagnostic fee. So of course I didn't get it fixed. Now I will have to get it fixed because my car will not pass inspection. I have 17 months left to pay on my car. I will never buy another car from Hyundai again.

THIS IS IN ARLINGTON, TEXAS 76017, VANDERGRIFF HYUNDAI, (817)557-6700. I AM CUSTOMER # 31585, INVOICE 207248 DIAGNOSIS WAS $150. I WANT MY MONEY BACK EXPEDITIOUSLY.

I have a 2011 Sonata 2.0T and I paid to have it diagnosed. I found out it is the airbag clock spring. I researched this before going in and told them the problem. They still charged me to diag it. Its the same clock spring found in the Elantra too. There is apparently a recall in the US but I’m in Canada and there is no recall. What gives? Safety don’t matter up here I guess. The stealership said it’s going to cost me $500 to fix so of course I didn’t get it done and will never buy a Hyundai again.

My Sonata 2006 airbag light does not go off. It is constantly. My sister had a Santa Fe 2005 and the sensor is always on for no apparent reason! I asked the service center about tbis and the guy was really because I wanted to up front cost to have this serviced. He went off on me (In El Paso Texas) and told me it could cost 400.00 dollars! It is not fair to be miss lead with all the information I have received! I would just like for the service department to be honest about defects. This is a reoccurring event in many Hyundai airbag sensors. I just need to know where I can go to get an honest readout. Where can I take my car besides the dealership. Who can diagnose this????

I have a 2006 Sonata and the light on the drivers side of the dash has come on and stays on. Haven't figured out what the fix might be yet.

10

If the drivers side air bag comes on in your Sonata is is most likely the connections under the seat causing a resistance code for the seat belt pretensioner. I have had mine replaced 5 times and the code cleared 3 times at a cost of over $1500. The first time just a few months after the cars purchase. The most recent times they tried to get me to replace it again, but luckily an honest service rep told me about the real problem. The worst part is that any time the airbag light is on the airbag will not deploy. I have a 2006 and I would say the light has been on for 3/4 of its lifetime. Hyundai put out a service bulletin in February of 2015 Number 15-BE-002 that a service rep at Hyundai actually gave me. Which details the real issue and the fact it is fixed with 2 Zip Ties. Yes 2 Zip Ties! Then called 5 hours later to tell me its the seat belt pretensioner again at a cost of $450. Either not haven been told I was informed of the real problem or just so inept they just forgot. Most of the work being done at Atlantic Hyundai and some at Hyundai 112 both on Long Island. I am surprised there isn't a class action lawsuit, due to the safety issue. If anyone needs more information please email me Sjeffrey9983@aol.com.

I also had 'airbag' light staying on issue when my 2006 Sonata was 4 yrs old and beyond warranty. My mechanic OBD'd it and found it was the passenger seatbelt pretensioner. I bought and installed a new one and that seemed to solve the problem, but only for a year or so. When I asked for warranty on that failed $350 part I was told there was no warranty on electrical parts. Fuming, I went online and found that many others have same problem. Pressure from NTSA caused Hyundai US put a 15 yr extended warr on this one part, but not in Canada. I fired off an email to Transport Canada on a Friday evening and was kinda surprised to get a phone call from Hyundai Canada the following Monday morning offering to fix the problem, AND a refund for the part I already purchased. Some three months after that fix, I got a letter from Hyundai Canada telling me that they generously now offer a 15 yr ext warr in Canada also. After getting the same part replaced another two times under this new warr, the dealership told me that a zip-tie had solved the problem by squeezing the plug connectors together. Now my trusty Sonata is 17 yrs old and you guessed it, airbag light is on again! I tipped the pass seat back and found the zip-tie repair to be holding (I cut the tie, inspected the plug, then reconnected and replaced the tie, didn't help). The "Airbag is Off" light works when the passenger seat is empty and goes out when seat is occupied, so I don['t think the seat sensor is the problem. OBD2 shows no codes. I tried the 'turn ignition on till airbag light goes out, switching off for 3 secs (repeat 3 times)' remedy (even crossed my fingers) to no effect. All the steering wheel controls seems to work just fine, but I'm wondering if the clock spring is causing the ongoing issue. Besides going to the dreaded dealership, any suggestions??
