Question type: General

how can you tell if a motor is a 318 or 360?
i noticed on my truck, the motor is stamped 360 on the front of the block but i bought a parts truck, the guy said it has a 318, but its not the original motor for this truck, more like the fifth one, its blown up so im not worried about running it in my truck, but it has the 5 speed trans that i want for my truck, and since the genius behind chrysler motors couldnt make both motors balanced one way or the other, i know that i cant use all the parts on a 318 to swap the trans.
i havent looked to see if the parts motor is stamped yet, but any help on how to tell a 318 from a 360 would be appreciated

A 5.2 liter is a 318 motor. A 5.9 liter is a 360 motor. I drive a 97 dodge ram 1500 pickup which has a 5.2 liter motor (318).

well i know what the motor to liter is, but where on the actual motor does it say, without running the numbers, again, the parts motor is not the original motor for that truck, is was replaced 5 times, and the guy i bought the truck from isnt that smart

There is no way to tell the difference from the outside other than the casting numbers. The casting numbers are on the drivers side, back 1/3 of the engine, under the exhaust. It will say either 360 or 318 in the numbers. Beyond that both engines are exactly the same on the outside, all the parts will interchange except for the rotating assembly

I have a 1997 dodge extended cab with a 360 motor in it and the transmission went out , I bought a 318 transmission , and I measured them and the both measure the same , so I was wondering if I could put the 318 in a 360 97 dodge truck ??????

Yes you should be able to use a 318 trans on a 360 if all the measurements are right

I have a single cab 95 dodge 1500 2wd with the 5.2 130, 000 miles but the motors still good. I'm having trouble getting it registered so I bought a cab and 1/2 97 dodge 1500 2wd with 5.2 that has a bad water pump and blown head gaskets. Just got it today for 700$ but it looks good. So I'm gonna take the good motor and put it in my new truck tomorrow. I was just gonna go for it but will I have any problems? Like the ecu or pcm or whatever it is? And what should I replace besides oil coolant plugs and wires? Thanks

I am working with it right now I don't thank so but it is so close to bolting on the DODGE transmission it's like a 8th of a inch to putting it together.
