Take a look at the transmission mounts, frequently people just put it in park and NOT use the parking brake, this plays hell with the mounts, would hazard to guess the transmission mounts are bad, inspect with a floor jack~ or in this case slide it into gear and just leave it there subjecting the car to pushing forces, which will break the transmission mounts~

With a MANUAL transmission, especially in an older car with a lot of miles on it, if that applies to you, the shifter is probably just worn out. But it could be loose linkage that just needs to be tightened up. Stock shifters aren't too expensive and if you can find one in a salvage yard, from a car with low miles, that probably wouldn't cost much.

the tranny is a toploader, no linkage to adjust.
