i've had a similar problem with my wiring from my ignition column to the dash ignition circuitry replaced. it exhibited similar problems but it didnot die at all. the buick Riviera was 19 years old when it would not start at times like that.

do you know if they fuel pressure regulator is leaking, a quick test would be to pull of the vacuum hose and if you smell gasoline, then the regulator is likely to be bad do you know if you are getting spark at the spark plugs, determining whether the spark plugs and/or spark plug wires are good another possibility could be a bad crankshaft position sensor

Sounds like it is fuel related. If it does start occasionally, then you are getting spark. You need to check your fuel pressure with the Key On and the Engine Off at the Schrader Valve under the hood. Should be 30+ psi.
