flashing shift (D) indicator *** anyone have the same problem??? ****

*** anyone have the same problem??? ****
out of nowhere the D/drive light started flashing. Took it out of gear to neutral, the nuetral light comes on but the D light is still flashing.
Turned the engine off, started it back up and everything is back to normal.
Normal for a month, then it happened again.
Turned off the engine off, restarted and everything is back to normal.
The car shifts / drives like normal all the time.
Nonetheless too it to a shop, and they tried to pull the codes, but got nothing. Advised me to go to HONDA as they may be about to pull the code using the HONDA's computer reader.

The flashing light indicates a transmission problem. I think it has to go to the Honda dealer to read the code. I had the same thing happen. I decided to check my fluid level first, sure enough it didn't even register on the stick. I just needed fluid. I don't think I would have gotten off that cheap if I had taken it to the dealer.

I experienced the same light illumination. Shifted to neutral, or any other gear, and light still kept blinking. Pulled off the road and turned off the engine. Restarted engine, blinking light was gone. Didn't reappear as I drove on to the destination. Checked the display at lunch, no blinking light present. Also checked the transmission fluid level, no problems there. It sounds like it may be another one of Honda's infamous phantom faults that they want to charge about a hundred bucks to say they don't know why, and that they reset all the codes so it shouldn't be a problem, Perhaps they believe they should get a hundred dollars from every Honda owner periodically, so they just program the codes to come on randomly, and not show up in the history, so nobody else can find them. Yes, I am more than somewhat skeptical of the major auto industry these days, this isn't the first instance of phantom codes, but they still charge you for their poor design and poor information. If they really cared about owners, they would leave some of the usless info out of the owners guide and put in a table of all the codes and light illuminations, with the radio or dash readout connected so the codes could be displayed for the owner. Then we would know if it is a critical thing, or simply a friendly reminder that an oil change is needed, or something of that sort. Why all the mistery? A HUNDRED BUCKS, OF COURSE!!!!!!

Same problem on my 2007 Pilot LX. Changed fluid (never get this transmission or any transmission flushed!) - takes 3 cycles to get transmission fluid completed. Only one done so far. Light still comes on and will not register a transmission code. Mechanic tells me not to worry unless you sense there is a genuine problem with shifting. Light may have to be on for a very long time for a code to register.

I had the same problem on my 2005 Pilot. The code read "4th gear clutch pressure sensor". My son is a mechanic and I told him that it shifted fine and he said that if the pressure is not right on the 4th gear band in the transmission, it could wears uneven or even out and that could mean alot more money fixing the transmission

also, it is recommended to use Honda tranmission fluid because it has whale blubber in it and it makes it easier to shift - more slippery

I had Honda Odyssey 03 I had the same problem for two years. I already change transmission fluid from Honda's Dealer but it won't stop flashing. I bother me when I see the flashing light on. So far, nothing wrong with my transmission. It could be sensor something that Honda dealer need to be reset.

Had same problem, it was a shift solenoid that wasn't working due to a broken connector for the wires. Replaced in about 60 seconds and works fine. Cost 25 bucks. On 05 pilot located next to the trans drain plug

FYI... I own a 2004 honda pilot for 6 years now and this has happened periodically to me... Honestly... I have always ignored it and my car is still fine 200,000 miles and counting... So I'm calling BS here... Phantom troubles...

The same thing just happened to me this morning. I was quite scared because the engine light came on as well. My car is still under warranty. Should I take it to Honda?

I have a 2005 Honda accord and the same thing happened to me this morning. I googled it and found this page. First thing I read was transmission...I freaked. Then I read more and it said to pull over and shut down engine and restart so I did and the light stopped blinking..has anyone figured out what this really means? My car is up to date on maintenance and just hoping this isn't something major...thanks for the help

I just bought a 2004 Pilot from a used car dealership with a very questionable reputation. Mine has 126000 miles on it. I noticed that it came on periodically and I hear a slight squeal around 45MPH, but it goes away once i decelarate to about 20 MPH, doesn;t come back until I exceed 45MPH. Weird thing is that I can't get the flashing D light unless I am using the AC. The flashing light came up every time, once i stopped using the AC it stopped. My extended warranty kicks in after I drive 1000 miles, so i will get it checked once I am covered, but the car runs great. Very weird....

Yeah I think mine may be AC related as well. It seems like its happening more and more often but im goign to try that 25$ part near the drain plug and see if thats the issues, it doesn appear to have any problems shifting

My '03 Pilot started with the drive light flashing this morning. Took it to my mechanic and it didn't read for any problems. Called Honda and they said it means Don't Drive that something is wrong with the transmission. Taking it back to my mechanic to see the if he can figure it out.

Happened on my 2004 CRV today. I suspect it will be gone tomorrow based on this page. Honda dealer is more than an hour away. If happens again I'll ask my mechanic. A new transmission would make me sell the car - 165K miles.

Thank you all. Very helpful. This is a very, very old problem. I own a 1994 Acura Legenda, made by Honda with all the phantom bugs. When the D light started flashing, I freaked a little. Being a 39 year old single mom, I need that old boat to survive and my mechanical knowledge ends at filling up the fluids. So thanks for the suggestion to do that before dumping more money into my car.

Did anyone who had the flashing "D" light issues with the A/C running ever have their problems resolved? What was the outcome? Just curious because I think I may be in the same situation with my 07 Honda Pilot. I've had this problem for months and the mechanic ran some codes leading to errors in the 3rd/4th gear pressure clutch sensors, however I can only get the flashing "D" light it seems when I have the A/C running.

My wife had this problem this morning and I just got back from the mechanic. When getting your fluids checked during an oil change, make sure the car is cool when the mechanic checks the transmission fluid. You will get a false "full" reading otherwise. He topped it off just now and the problem stopped.

I have a 2004 pilot. Mine comes on while driving on the highway but not local streets. Mechanic thinks its a sensor indication transmission is overheating. We're installing an external air cooled component to see if that cools the fluid down and see if that solves it.

This not an answer. I drive for lyft. While in philly last night. D light started flashing. Gave it a "oh oh". Drove slowly back to jersey. Stopped shut car off now back to normal all day today. Of course paranoid bout the tranny..gonna ck tran fluid hopefully that's all. Got over 200,000 miles on my baby. Anyone know EXACTLY wat problem is? Drives like a dream and no shifting problems.any help will help

Re: 2004 Honda CRV Drive light flashing My mechanic checked the car's computer with no success. Got an answer involving the check engine light. Hmmm. Dealer is 90 minutes away so trying other solutions first. I had the transmission fluid drained and refilled with Honda's fluid (vs. generic). This was only a week ago, but so far no more flashing, and that week included a 700 mile trip. For Frank, this car has 170,000 miles.

My 2007 Pilot had this happen yesterday and again today. I always run the A/C (summer in the south) and I also had my transmission fluid replaced at my last oil change. Pretty sure it was not Honda brand. Does using Honda ATF really make that much difference? Has anyone actually had to have Honda "fix" the problem?

2011 Honda Accord ExL V6 78500miles on it. Driving down the interstate and the D light flashes .. I took it to Honda they looked at the ATF and saw it was black so they drained and filled it again 100 bucks is their fav price right. Well that fixed the prob for another 2 hour so driving on the interstate and it does it again. The car is shifting perfectly no slip or grinding. This morning the D light didnt blink at all on my way back to honda. They agree with me its probably a glitch because i dont feel anything wrong with the performance. I will go to them in 2 days and hopefully they reset my cars computer to get rid of glitches. Will update but if someone can think of anything else let me know. Thanks

I have the same problem before. On my Honda Accord. You have to change the solenoid valve single liner. And. Solenoid valve shifting. And the censor. Transmission oil switch pressure all of the censor are located in the transmission. That. Is the problem. Cause I know when you drive the car after some miles the D4 start flashing but is not a problem because the car shifting is perfect every Honda. Have the same problem .just change this.censor. I fix my Honda Accord one year ago and I don't have any problems with.

SO... I have read through hundreds of comments of people who have encountered the blinking D, so far my conclusion is that it is nothing serious! You could drive it normally for years probably with absolutely no problems! But the things possibly causing the blinking D is; Temperate sensor in transmission Pressure sensor on transmission Solution: replace pressure sensor, or/ add transmission cooler. I also have the vsc 4 lock warning light come on while idling for a while, caused by idling rpm being abnormal, most common cause; IAC valve.

The D light blinking is a transmission error code. For my 04 pilot, I had to replace a pressure switch. I did this at the dealer for about $185. It's not the end of the world. These are well built and well designed vehicles.

@Jazmin99 If your car is shaking at a certain MPH generally it has to do with the wheels, commonly a bent rim or Tire bulge

@Seiza if the blinking D stays on constantly even after restarting it every time either you may have come in contact with one of the sensors and damaged it on accident causing it to constantly tell the computer theirs something wrong or there's a genuine transmission problem, but that's just my guess. Does it drive normal?

2007 Honda Pilot. I had this happen several years ago. I ignored it and it went away. It happened again today so I called my dealer. One service rep said to bring it in because it is probably just a faulty sensor if it seems to be running fine otherwise. I realized I couldn't make it in today and I called back and ended up speaking to another guy who said it was a "float switch" that would require replacement and would require about 2 hours for about $340 for parts and labour. Yup, a mystery problem to me and the service guys. I think I'll just wait and see if it goes away. That's the cheapest and easiest option unless something catastrophic actually does happen.

2005 Honda Pilot EX with 150K miles. Drive light blinks extremely intermittently. Goes away for a month or more then starts blinking again. No other light is on. Turn off the ignition and then turn back on and blinking goes away. Transmission shop could not get an error code. Transmission seems to shift fine.Fluids fine. Solenoids, switches maybe a loose wire? Problem is so intermittent it is tough to diagnose exactly.

I put a new transmission in my 2003 Pilot in Sept 2015 at 185,000 miles. It currently has 193,000 miles on it and I began hearing what I believe to be the bands vibrating. It comes and goes depending on speed. Tonight the D indicator started flashing. I turned it off, let it sit for 10 min and started it again driving away and the light has not flashed again. I am going to pull the warranty paperwork on the transmission and if still within the warranty get the issue recorded and checked.

This happened on my 2007 Pilot a few years ago. I delayed doing anything about it and the problem went away. It happened again a few weeks ago so I called the Honda Dealer. One person in the serviced department said it was a faulty sensor, a minor repair, just bring it in before 4:00 pm and they would look after it. I called back when I realized that I couldn't make it in by 4:00 to book an appointment the next day, and the service that I spoke to then said that it was a problem with the "float valve", and would take a few hours to repair and cost about $350 parts and labour to repair. I hesitated to commit to that repair, and the problem has magically gone away. Like others in this thread have said, it seems to be a mystery problem that Honda doesn't really have a consistent answer for.

To Gideon I just bought a 2004 pilot about a month ago. I must admit during the test drive I already saw the D light flashing and just did not mind it. I'm not a car guy and this is my very first vehicle and have always wanted a pilot. My excitement took control of me. I did not think it was a big deal until my wife saw it and was alarmed by it, so the next day I googled it, and I saw this thread. I am interested in your case because like yours, mine starts to flash every time I reach over 80kmh which is highway speeds from where I live. This is based on a week of observation on my part. Do you think this is also a sensor problem? Thank you

2005 Honda Pilot (D) light on won't start and the engine light flashes 5 times anyone know anything? Please

2003 Honda Pilot with the intermittent "D" flashing. I've done a fluid change and replaced the 3rd and 4th Pressure Switches, but the problem persists. When the "D" light is solid, the transmission hangs up and jerks when switching gears, but when the light blinks, it shifts smoothly and with no problems. The dealership here was unable to pull any codes and I have an OBD2 reader that can't pull any codes either. I did do the "paperclip trick" with the OBD2 connector and like the post above me, I got the engine light to flash 5 times, but I am unable to find anything online as to what that might mean. I've purchased a new Transmission Temperature Sensor that I will install soon (I've noticed that the blinking "D" light tends to occur when it's colder outside, so perhaps the overall temperature has something to do with it and the new sensor might be the fix). If this new sensor doesn't fix it, I'll be pretty much done with the troubleshooting I can think of and all the repair shops here want to do is replace the transmission (ugh).

Believe it or not, this has happened twice to me, in the past 3 years and both times I took the fuel cap off and put it back on, and poof. No more flashing D light. Rather odd warning light miscommunication. This was suggested to me by my Honda service people.

The flashing D light has happened to me a few years back (2003 Honda Pilot), and I don't remember it coming back on until just yesterday and today, and it happened twice in the middle of driving on the freeway. Both times, I stopped, turned off car, and restart, the flashing went away. I think I am going to have my next oil change double check all of the fluid, reset the battery thing like some of you said, before spending $100 for them to find out what code??? The Honda dealer tech did say it could be just the sensor switch.

with my situation, I have always been able to restart and the D flashing will go away. It is so intermittent, it has not happened for another month for me now... but not being able to restart, definitely not related to the D flashing, it could be battery, probably need to go to the service center, if it still does not restart.

Thank you guys for all the responses on this page i also had this same problem. it happened when i was parking at a mall and switched from reverse to drive. "D" was blinking and Engine light was on. i couldn't pass 1st gear while driving home and then all the sudden it worked fine but the engine light was still on. i went to autozone ran their computer on it and it said it was possibly a Transmission Speed Sensor with the following codes P0720, P1747, P1780, P0722. The guy their recommended just switching the tranny fluid first before anything. did that and still same problem. looked here on this page and saw the disconnect the battery for a few minutes trick and now it works like charm. but definitely it was my fault, the tranny fluid was low and should have changed it a while back. so the solution that worked for me: 1. check transmission fluid. 2.change transmission fluid/ or add if necessary. 3.switch through all gears for lubrication. 4.drive car to 10mph at least around the block. 5.check fluids again 6.disconnect battery for 5 minutes then connect again and that's it, you guys saved me cash! (:

Thanks guys for all the info my Honda Element just started with the flashing D lights about a month ago and yes it goes away when I shut it off and then start it again, but now it is happening more and more often. The tranny oil is at the proper level but maybe it needs to be changed. I will try that. I also get the engine light after I put gas in it but I have learned to turn the gas cap several times past the clicking & if that doesn't work I disconnect the battery and then the engine light goes away.

I had a similar issue lately with my honda accord 2008. I went through this forum for the answer. So thought why not leave my experience that might be helpful for any future issues. So I had my Drive (D) blinking for a few weeks that start after driving for about 15 mins. I bought the OBD2 scanner and scanned myself and got the P0717 code, which is no transmission speed sensor. So I went to Honda service center for a repair and ran diagnosis that cost 150$. They found the same code and decided to change the sensor. However, they saw some marks over the transmission and suggested me to change it for about 2400$. Instead of spending so much right away. First, I wanted to see if changing the sensor will fix it, which cost me a total of 550$ including 90$ for the sensor, 410$ for service charge and rest in transmission oil change and tax.

hello all, my girlfriend bought a new car and donated her 2005 Honda pilot to me for all the house repairs I had done. Long story short, for the 2 years she drove it the D light would come on and blink after driving about 10 minutes. turn off ignition it would go away and come back on later. the vehicle has no shifting issues and has 234,000 miles on it. searched online forums ..no help really. Added 12 onces of Lucas transmission fix and after about one trip appox 10 miles if doesn't blink any more. Been about 3 weeks and 500 miles as I don't drive it all the time. Took it on 50-100 mile trips city driving no issues. for 12 bucks it worth a try! no more annoying blinking.

Thanks for all the ideas, folks. My wife's 2006 Honda Pilot started doing the D light thing the other day but otherwise runs normally. I plan to check the shift solenoid connector mentioned by Gary if it's not inside the transmission. We had the fluid changed about 4 or 5 months ago with Honda spec fluid. And, no, the Honda name on the bottle doesn't solve the problem. Any fluid that meets or exceeds Honda specs will work. But here are a few ideas to consider. And I'm not an expert, but as an electronics technician with ten years' experience building luxury SUVs and 53 years' experience total working on cars, I want to say this: 1. Not every problem can be solved by a software update! Software does not remove a wire that is in the wrong place nor put one where it should be if it is missing. You CANNOT program away a stupid engineering error. And Honda does make errors. E.g. - the last time the oil change was due, the maintenance minder gave me a B 6 code. So I dragged out the owner's manual and looked up number 6 on "B" maintenance schedule. It says I should change the rear differential fluid. I'd be happy to do that if they could show me the rear differential. It's a front wheel drive vehicle! DUH, Honda! Getting back to the problem at hand, if the shift solenoid connector is good and it shifts normally, we'll probably drive the crap out of it. A "D" light may never be a problem unless you let it get the best of you and become a "GD" light like Mr. Wilson's "GD" garden lanterns in Dennis the Menace.

Also, for the guy who had high engine RPMs and thought his transmission fluid might be low, I'd say that's a good possibility. The torque converter needs fluid for fluid drive up to lockup speed where it locks into direct drive. If it gets low enough so that there's insufficient fluid between the turbines, the engine could be running wild with very little or no resistance as if the car was in neutral.

I brought a Honda 2003 pilot at an sheriff and Marshall auction. Long story short after getting it serviced by Honda I take my car on a drive and it d starts to flash. I called Honda they freaked out and said bring it back. Then they tell me it's a transmission issue and its going to cost $2,400 to fix so I should get rid of it. I'm not going to tell you how much Honda charged me to take care of the other things in the car but didnot know that this car had this problem ....... So I took my car to a transmission specialist, he spends all day inspecting my car. He told me my car is not kicking into 3rd gear and that it needs to be replaced. it's going to cost me $450 to replace the third gear clutch and that the transmission mount needs to be replaced. so once I get my car back and I drive it I will keep y'all updated.... By The Way I heard there was a recall on Honda pilot because of transmissions. the check engine light gives me code P0730

But now I must go OBD my throw away car to see what Amazon can sell me next.....good driving!!!!

Update on my wife's 2006 Honda Pilot: We took it to a transmission shop. They put the diagnostic tool on it and said it was an electrical problem. They sent us to Greg's Repair Service in McAllen, TX, where they changed a pressure sensor, and that was it! They didn't have to open the transmission or anything like that. It was right there on the outside of it. I don't even remember what they charged, but it was very reasonable, compared to the horror stories ya'll have told. They seemed like good, honest folks. Their number, if you need it, is (956) 631-8366, and I am, in no way, getting any form of compensation for telling you that!

By the way disconnecting the battery resets all of the sensors, it doesn't solve the problem. if a person wants to sell you a lemon all they have to do is disconnect the battery, let you test drive it and you wouldn't know that it has an engine or transmission issue. that's why I once a battery is disconnected from the car it has to be driven on the highway at a certain speed to reset the sensors. Take the car to a transmission specialist. Believe it or not reviews online can actually point you in the right direction of who is honest mechanics. I am in Staten island and I found an honest Master mechanic there's a difference between a regular mechanic and a master one

I feel some times blinking is directly involved to malfunctioning brake switch.

I know that on many vehicles, stepping on the brake signals the PCM to unlock the torque converter. It goes back into lockup shortly after you release the brake. I'm not sure how that might affect your problem, but, yes, the brake light switch also acts as a sensor which gives input to the Powertrain Control Module (in other vehicles I've seen) which would be the module that controls the transmission and also receives signals back from ALL the tranmission's sensors.

My engine light came on and D was flashing. Honda Pilot 2011 manual said to check transmission fluid. I was getting an oil change anyway and the mechanic topped up my transmission fluid for free. The D stopped flashing. The engine light stopped appearing the next day. I love that I have an honest mechanic I can trust.

Hi everyone. I have read all the suggestions and stories on the the flashing “D” and Check Transmission light. As well , the Check Engine light has come on, on my 2011 Honda Pilot Touring model. It has approximately 185,000 miles or in Metric 293,000 km. I have had this issue come up before and at first thought it was a bad fuel issue. I had purchased a high quality fuel injector cleaner and the problem cured itself. I guess I got lucky. As of late, the same issue has became prevalent. Took the advice, disconnected the battery and it disappeared. Awesome, but ... came back a few days later. Please keep in mind with model years say 2010 and later, you will need GPS and radio codes to enter after the battery has been disconnected. Luckily, I had both. I will take it to dealership and inquire, hoping it’s a sensor issues as well. No issues with shifting or other transmission issues thus far.

It has happened to me twice on my 2004 Honda Pilot, each time it was the battery. Not long after the car would not start, got a new battery and the car was fine. No more flashing d could have been a low voltage problem. Hope that helps.

My honda is doing the same thing with the engine light on. I haven't seen anyone post my particular issue. The light says it's a transmission range switch..Its getting worse to the point where the van will not start til I take it out of park at times. It dont do it all the time. The part is $100 at autozone and thankfully it's easy to get to (behind front left wheel)

This happened to me today, i don’t think I’ve seen it till today. I have a 05 Honda Pilot 200k plus. I’m guessing most pilots have this problem. I accelerated too quick and too fast; the “D” flashing light came on. I drove it for 5.6 miles, I stopped and found this forum. It’s really helpful. (Thanks to everyone who has been posting for the past 4 years.) I turned off the car for a few seconds, turned it on and the D light went away. I had the transmission fluid changed about 2 week ago. So I know it’s full. During that time the Honda dealer did in inspection and nothings wrong with it, it’s just an old car and it’s been maintained really well at the dealer. The only thing is that sometimes it takes a bit to turn on as if the battery is dying but the battery is fine. And other times it turns on just fine. I’ll check the fluids again when it stops raining and update. In a previous post I saw someone posted something about the gas cap and I made sure it was shut tightly. Does anyone know how much it usually cost (rough estimate) to replace the transmission, parts and labor? I want to be ready for the possibility of the transmission failing. I can’t afford to buy a brand new car or even a used car. Can anyone tell me why I shouldn’t put more money into this car? Many people say it’s not worth it but I wanna know why?

for the 2004 - 2005 acura tsx this is directly associated with the 3rd and 2nd gear transmission pressure switches. as we know from being honda/acura drivers, the sensors are sensitive. about 100 for two @ oem.

My 2018 honda odyssey had the same problem. Found out rhat i parked it on a down slope overnight. So transmission fluid wasn't "level" if you will. Shut it off let it sit for 5 minutes. Ran fine. No blinking drive button anymore.
