my rear suspension in my  1997 towncar pumps up and stays up for anywhere
between 5 to 20 minutes while driving.  then my light comes on and it starts
sagging.  sometimes if i park it while its pumped up it stays up so i dont know if
it is a hole in the bags or a sticky valve or a sensor.

Sounds like it could very well be the height sensor which is located on the differential. I'm not sure , but I think that is what it is called. Turn off the switch in your trunk & see if the bags hold air. If they hold it is likely the sensor is bad. I have a 95, so I hope this is the same as mine. Good luck
