Engine

Asked by Pontiacnewbie Aug 10, 2016 at 01:04 AM about the Pontiac Firebird

Question type: General

I have a 71 pontiac ... And long story short,
my situation is this.... I pulled out my
engine and tranny and sent the engine to
Napa machine shop near me once I took it
apart and cleaned the block  with my
father.... initially my idea was to just rebuild
the engine straight up and add Holley
avenger injection .... But I want to be more
involved wit all the specs to make it a
better engine !!!... Be cool to says to
someone " yea man I changed my gear
ratio to blah blah" or my ci up 100 etc...,
my goal is to rebuild a 350 engine with
good fuel economy but tweak for some
better performance .. So my question I
gues is... What are some good engine set
ups for 350 Pontiac motor ?

$2K for that avenger setup. Yowza. Could keep it old school with a nice dual plane Edelbrock intake and 750cfm double pumper Holley. At that price you could do a dual carb setup and still have something left over for the cam. Just budget your entire build before you start, certain basics also have to be paid attention to: exhaust manifold vs headers, new heavy duty radiator/water pump, get a cam for the street that works with your intake. Rebuild or new heads ported and polished (something you can do on your own), new clutch and decide if you want to keep stock tranny and make it bulletproof, HD starter, HEI distributor, and then you have to consider safety items like new brakes. If this is your first car and it being a 71 Firebird, don't be afraid to keep it stock, it's a great car and you'll learn a lot just rebuilding it - the big exception is definitely move up to HEI/electronic ignition.
