tenspeed has done his homework. Subaru's are fussy, though with twice the belting and twice the excitement~

Change them at 105k (or sooner) on your model. Subaru 2.5 liters are INTERFERANCE engines, so if a timing belt breaks it often leads to severe valve train damage. Also when you change the belts, replace tensioners and water pump.

Timing belts are SMOOOTH- Timing Chains are like a coffee can full of marbles- What's the price you're willing to pay for this "reliability"~??

Bob, Subarus do not have two timing belts. Tenspeed and Dogbone are right about some maintenance intervals though. I would recommend doing it or having it done soon.

The interval for subaru t belts is 105k, and you should replace the water pump as well. You can purchase the range of parts as a kit and DIY, or pay a shop to handle it.

I had a 2004 WRX. I had the local dealer replace the belt at 100K miles. To be able to quote a lower price, they did not replace the water pump or pulleys. 12K miles later the belt was destroyed by a pulley going bad. I had the car fixed by a local mechanic. The dealer would not stand behind it. I called Subaru and they sent me a check for $500. Subaru is a great company but you must know as much or more than the dealership.

My 2004 WRX wagon has 75K and the dealer is telling me I need to replace the belt now (along with a bunch of other work that needs to be done) but I'd like to wait a bit on the belt for $$ reasons. So...is it ok to wait till 100K - or too risky?
