Brake light switch and hard brake petal

Asked by Dec 08, 2017 at 04:25 PM about the Mercury Tracer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 97 mercury tracer. The brake light switch has gone
out 4 times now, my roommate has fixed it for me every
time with no problem, this last time he replaced it the next
day I was driving for about 20 minutes then all of a sudden
my brake petal was very hard and would barely go down,
they still worked and stopped the car but it took a lot more
effort. I pulled over and turned the car off for a half hour or
so and when I turned it back on the brakes were normal
again, I then drove home another 20 minutes or so and the
same thing happened again. Someone told me it was the
brake booster but when I do the test suggested online
where you pump the brakes with the car off the results are
normal. My question is if it's possible the brake light switch
and the hard brake petal could be related? Did my
roommate do something wrong this time? He took it out
and put it back in again and the brakes haven't gotten hard
today yet but I haven't driven any long distances. Is there
something else that could be causing the problem? I
appreciate any help or suggestions
