It has a plastic or metal sleeve it sets in on top of the transmission. Depending on the year whether it's metal or plastic. It is either cracked or broken.

Depending upon the year and trans manufacturer, the shifter, ball and top cover can be replaced. Remove the boot and look for 4 bolts on the top cover. Take a picture of the door jamb sticker for reference because it has the build date and trans code. I would shop some place like NAPA before going to the dealer but the dealer is a good resource when all else fails. There may be some aftermarket vendors too.

dealerships seldom stock seldom replaced parts on vehicles over maybe five years from manufacturer date. they can order them and usually them in a day or so. AT A PRICE. Tried to purchase door striker posts for a 2000 ford. Same part for about six years. Not one dealership in New Orleans has one. Check on line if the part is needed. About a quarter of the price also.

Maybe mechanical parts, tracy, but I haven't had much luck with parts seldom used. Have had ford trucks since '96. Things like door strikers - nope. Bottom radiator grommets - nope. Window weather strip - nope. Then can be ordered and sometimes by tomorrow, but as I said before, at a price.

Well, if they don't have those uncommon parts I guess they won't have anything. And I've only been a Ford Tech since '87. LNC Truck will have all of the oddball parts your looking for - for a price.
