It's not common for the transponder chip to go bad, but you may have a problem with the programming in the PCM (powertrain control module) Ford did issue a TSB (technical service bulletin) for the 2004-2005 Explorer models that were having this issue, especially if it got wet under the hood. Do you have a second master key? If you do try it and use it to make another master, if not, you may find yourself going to the dealer.

A co-worker had a key go bad on her Ford Edge. The dealer told her if they are dropped hard or thrown the chip can be damaged. So yes they can go bad, but I don't think it is real common.

My 2002 Ford F150 does not have a chip in the key. Are you sure yours does?

Unless it was a fleet vehicle it will have the chip in the key. With the way keys get banged around they fail all the time, at least 13 year old Ford ones do.

A good read on the "PATS" keys used in these vehicles.....https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php ?t=234975
