not if its in 4x4 low removing front shaft wont help. its ran by vacuum located on the front axle and runs up firewall on the passenger side under the hood. try putting it in neutral click to 4x4 hi and then back up about 100ft if that don't work try to take a screw driver to the lever on the axle to kinda help it out in shifting to 2wd pretty simple when you see it. let me know hope this helps

To anybody with this problem, the driveline often gets bound up, and the shift encoder motor is not very strong, so it can't make the shift. I've gotten them to shift by backing the truck onto loose gravel, dirt etc and then goosing it enough for the rear wheels to spin a little. This will take the bind out of the driveline. If not, jack up the rear axle in the air (just off the ground is all you need). If it STILL won't shift (try it both in neutral and park, and give it at least 30 seconds).... then the shifter in the transfer may be stuck. It happens when 4L is never used, and someone shifts it, or accidentally hits the wrong button. (I've had this happen when testing an encoder motor after installing a new one, I've learned to not go to 4L because it cost me an hour of time to fix it). In this case, pull the encoder motor off, and shift the transfer case manually with a wrench to 2 HI. Then with the motor still off, push the button for 2 HI, and the motor "should" move to that position. Then bolt everything back together.

I'm having this issue, as well. But I do not have the shifter motor. My '98 Expedition has a diaphragm on the front of the transfer case, instead. The dash cluster does NOT show the vehicle as being in 4L. If I flip the switch to A4WD (Stopped, Neutral & full brake), the A4WD light will come on. And there are about 8 subtle clicks from the dash, but no change. Dropping into Reverse ot Drive form this does not change anything. I am still in 4L. Please advise.

I had the same happen on my 99 Eb expy, disconnected the battery waited a few minutes, reconnected it(with switch it awd) started it and as soon as I put it in drive all was as it should be.

trans must be in neutral brake applied firmly if you have been monkeying around in 4wl like i was...you may have to re-boot the main computer...this works 95% of the time ...there is NOTHING wrong with the tranny...disconnect the battery ...wait a full 15 minutes..reconnect battery ..start vehicle with tranny switch already in auto drive ...that s two wheel high...put foot on pedal and...shift to neutral... wait with vehicle running..you should hear it shift ..and the 4wd lights will go out..good luck...your computer can cause this problem...it worked for me and lots of others...you will not find this in this site...my wife has a (majic cell phone) she can find almost anything...i swear...this might have saved a lot of people a lot of money if they'd known about it
