transmission problem

2009 crown vic cant turn off overdrive. it also takes me several trys to get it into
1st gear when cold, i have to shift from neutral to drive 15 or 20 times.

You mean you can't turn off the overdrive light? That means the overdrive is disabled. Also when the overdrive light is on without hitting the button, it indicated a transmission fault code is stored in the system due to an issue and since you have to shift it oddly to get it to move, that is an indication your transmission needs attention. Might be as simple as a solenoid, new fluid or filter or a full rebuild. Have a local trans shop inspect it for you.
