depends on your budget. if you plan to drive it stock then a GT500 would be your best choice but if your on a budget and interested in building a car then you cant beat a 5.0. stock theyre about 215 horse which is a lot lower than newer model GTs but with heads a few other bolt-ons they can hit 500+ easy

the new gt500 has the highest at like 500ish. 03-04 cobra had 390. classic mustangs had ridiculous amounts as well back when there were no emissions.

Highest output stock mustang ever produced is the current GT500 from ford... the Highest output mustang you can buy from a dealership.... you can get the GT500 Supersnake package which can be taken all the way to 750hp... define Stock???

If you define stock as the way Ford made them, then there were two that Ford made special for the air force (One was destroyed during shipping). Can't remember the specifics, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere...

Alex!....Buddy! Where did you go? We miss your wisdom and knowledge at the Import Page....NOT!

135

It would be the new Shelby's, but for just a GT it would me the latest gen. ('04-'09) with the 4.6L V8, I believe that they are pushing about 300HP.

i thought you were staying off the stang page... and yeah... im thinking ill come rain some displacement all over your imports... CHEERS

2,735

they wernt really produced but yes i know which ones you are talking about... It was a tribute to the mustang fighter plane... It was a 425hp supercharged variant of the GT... but thats very good i had forgotten about it there for a bit... California customs also made 5 replicas that were given to the wives of soldiers lost in the war... as far as i know the surviving original is sitting in some CEO's garage somewhere...

Alex, there is a difference. I visit the Mustang site with a LOT of RESPECT for a TRUE MUSCLECAR that survived every obstacle that killed the GTO, Chevelle, Road Runner, GTX, Charger and the other cars that vanished over the years. The Mustang never went anyplace, it evolved with the times and is a true survivor. In fact, the 2010 GT that was reviewed in the current Motor Trend is genuinely a badass! That is completely showroom stock. The point is Alex, and I hope you'll grow up and learn something here. Everyone has the right to love cars. Although I endorse imports for the most part, I genuinely RESPECT the Ford Mustang and all owners of such vehicles. I am a visitor to this site; and as a GUEST, I have NO RIGHT to disrespect any of the participants here. The ONLY reason I WALKED OFF INTO YOUR ASS was because you were disrespectful without cause. If any of my blog has offended any Ford Mustang affectionado...my humble apology, it was unintentional. Thank you for allowing me to VISIT your site with respect.

That would be the P-51 Mustang Fighter plane from WWII; It was introduced towards the end of the war as a bomber escort. It was the only fighter plane that had enough range to escort bombers on raids over Germany. In fact, the plane was flown by the "Red Tails" aka, "Tuskegee Airmen." They were the first all Black Fighter Squardon in the Army Air Corp and was noted for never losing a bomber under their protection. NOT A SINGLE ONE!

Actually the 03-04 terminater cobras made 425 stock. They were undereated simply for insurance reasons. By rating it at only 390 the insurance rates on the cobras would be a little lower.

I'd like to get my hands on one of those Police Package mustangs I believe it was the California police were using for a while... Just think... 5.0 Litre, 5-speed, police pacakge highway interceptor... Basically a Beefed up street racer built with California's tax dollars! Can't get much better than that ;)

175

Hey, My name is chris and i'm new to this blogging thing. I love Mustangs and as I was reading through this question and answer page I couldn't help but see that you were referring to the P-51A and also the P-51B. Both produced by Jack Roush. The horse power for these two beast is 510bhp/510ft-lb torque. The asking price is around the 80,000 dollar area but you can find them for about 60,000 on ebay. I personally like the Jack Roush Blackjack with its advanced suspension system that helps eliminate wheel hop. Also the fastest stock mustang ever produced would have to be the the Saleen S302 Extreme. 620bhp/620 ft-lb torque. There is also a Saleen H302 Dark Horse. Both have the same power stats but the DH looks bad a**....

2,735

while all of your information is well researched and true it misses the stock bit... A stock mustang is one produced and lisenced under FORD... The Saleen is not really a ford anymore... While it uses the Ford Mustang as a base almost everything is upgraded and or changed... the Ford mustang Super snake did have a option for 725hp and i believe 680ftlbs tq But this option was a special option for the GT500 and had to be shipped to the Shelby compound for modification... This too really doesnt make it a stock mustang... The rousch mustangs (the P51 tribute cars) are also modified versions of Mustang GTs... Although im sure someone here will point out that you can order saleen mustangs from a dealership i still dont believe them to be stock Ford Mustangs because the parts are outsourced to other companies... My definition of stock: A vehicle that can be ordered from a dealership AND uses only that companies parts, mechanics, and assembly lines.

the mustang with most stock horsepower is a 2007 mustang boss shinado its twin tubro 302 with 1000bhp and yes it was produced and sold for 1800000 and for the saleen it is a mustang the saleen name is put on for the design by steve saleen

65

you forgot bout the weight to torqe ratio to the 5.0 puts out the same torqe as the 4.6 modular and they got bout 230 horse not 215

65

yea what your sayin is true im a ford guy all the way but theres imports i gotta give respect to i mean look at most of the cars on the road there not ford dodge or chevy there mostly toyota handa and mitsubishi good gas mileage and the 4s and 6s arent to slow either a stock gt eclipse puts out the same horse as a 5.0 but gets way better gas milage so alex do us all a favor and shut up

175

Hey Mike. I too I'm a true Mustang guy. I hated the thought of when Ford had wanted to discontinue it and promote the probe. That was about when the Mustang was in the fox body stage. Anyways getting to the point. A stock 1987 Mustang had 225 Hp (HO). While a stock Eclipse puts out 265 Hp and 262 FtTrq. Though this car puts down this kind of horse power it still can not run toe too toe with it. The Eclipse is tuned for gas mileage, as you stated, and the Mustang is tuned for pure gas guzzling power. The eclipse would give the 5.0 a run for its money but I doubt it would be able to take it in a balls to the wall free for all. To be fair though, at the time there were no imports that could run with this car. Plus on top of that, that was just a 5.0. The Cobra, which debuted in 1993, would demolish a gts though. Once again though, I give much respect to imports. They are some powerful machines. So kudos to them, but I have to say stock to stock, N/A to N/A, an American Muscle Car such as a Cobra (n/a) would walk all over them. However its a much different story on a road course. Imports own that field but domestic automakers are tightening up and doing there homework to correct that.

65

the eclipse im talkin bout is an 2001 and it only has 215 hp but go look at the tq on the mustang campared to them and yes a cobra would demolish a gt eclipse but an eclipse gt would outrun a 5.0 in the long run because the 5.0s topspeed is bout 120 while the eclipse can run up to 150 but not in a quarter mile because the mustang is built for the strip. and to let you know the 93 cobra your talkin bout would get smoked by a 350z or supra. the cobra just has some extra things done to the suspension and few different engine upgrades over the gt and they werent supercharged till the late 90s

175

Hmmm. Nice choice of imports to compare to a Mustang. I see you bring up a 350z. That is a very interesting pick. I would've said a 300zx tt myself though. Regardless of the make and year though a Mustang would dog this car. Not any mustang though. the 350z would dog a v-6 stang. In it defense though, Shelby has came out with a supercharged v-6 model. The Shelby cs-9. Besides that though. A stock 2000 Cobra R would run circles around both of cars you just mentioned. That is if their both stock. I can't help but wonder why you would mention a 350Z though. Those cars are nice and every thing but their not very fast. Even after being modded those cars are still sub-par to many others. The rx-7 is one that comes to mind. Also the cobra's weren't supercharged until 2002 (first year the 2003 Terminator was made). Prior to that the Cobra's were all N/A. Their are some pretty potent imports out their. That's why I respect the h-e-l-l out of them. But the truth of the matter is, if you don't plan on spending 60,000+, your not going to get true power house car. The GT mustangs (N/A) have always been monsters right out of the gate. The N/A cobra's were a force to be reckoned with. All in all though nobody keeps a stock sports/muscle car. That's when you see who has deeper pockets. The deeper the pockets the faster the car..

16,925

chris you do realize that a stock 350z beats the mustang gt right??? it runs nearly the exact same 1/4 mile time as the gt and stomps all over it in the handling and braking department. you have obviously no idea what the 350z can do by the way you are talking.

175

Hey chase. I do know what I'm talking about. Obviously you don't though. You have the name all wrong my friend. Its now called the 370z first of all. -Secondly, look at the numbers ~The 370Z(right name) has 335 HP and @270Ftlbtrq. ~The 2010 GT has 315Hp and 325 lbs of torque. So if you do the math and look at what both of these cars are putting down on the streets is about .05% less then that of their projected turn key power. So the 370Z HP is putting down 318rwhp and 256rwtq and the GT is putting down 299.25rwhp and 308.75rwtq Now the next consumption is that many people believe that more horsepower the faster the car. That's true of course but the real power comes form the tq. The torque curve is crucial. Though I'm sure you know that. Fortunately for ford their engineers remembered this as well. The difference in tq is what sets these two cars apart and gives the stang the breathing room to out gun the 370Z. Also ford has a race pack for the new GT's. This performance package allows the car to run through corners a little better. As stated in the last response I made. Imports own the track. Looking forward to your response.....

2,735

Chris man... you have a couple holes here... the 370 is gonna be faster out of the box... its so much lighter and is geared more aggressively... Torque is best described to most people as the force of the acceleration you feel... and for everyday and even spirited everyday driving it is what you feel... the HP is what really generates the numbers (but gutless engines with not torque suffer so its a ballance kinda) for example my car generates almost 400ftlbs tq and it feels like a rocket ship accelerating but at the end of the day im not breaking 12s ... So while im not getting rid of my GT anytime soon the 370 is a little more sports car... its also a strict 2 seater... which also helps save weight...

135

I just wanna throw out there that the BOSS 429 was rated at around 375hp for insurance reasons but the guys drivin the on the circle track say they were easily up to 500hp stock with carbs and naturally aspirated.

175

I was giving you both the benefit of the doubt that you were talking about the new one, seeing as how this one actually has respectable numbers. The older model ones are just a waste of money. The only thing the the older 350Z's were good for were modifying the body and giving off a very deceiving appeal that were actually fast. Nissan did have a Nismo model that came out in which you got a better stock body kit, exhaust note, rims, spoiler, air intake, and red brake calipers, but the car was still sub par. Since were not referring to the newest model z let us not compare it to the new GT. Rather the 1999-2001 Cobra. We shall exclude the 2000 Cobra R for its limited production numbers. The 99-01 Cobra would make short work of the 350Z at the strip. Numbers don't lie my friend. As far the track goes, that's a different story. Though the 350Z might be able to win on the track, It wouldn't be by much, that's if it would be able too. The Cobra, as you know I'm sure, has 320 Hp at the crank. That roughly estimates down to 300rwhp and 317lbfttg which estimates down to 301rwtrq. The number for the lower model Z aren't important as they are barely even half the numbers as just stated (at the wheels). The 01 Cobra also got a bit of an upgrade through its irs. To help it carve those worrisome corners. Once again like I said. The cars are nice but the only true contenders that Nissan has to offer are the skyline, 300ZX Twin Turbo and well that's about it. They have others like the 240sx, but those cars aren't really all that fast. Not until you spend some cash under the hood. Looking for to your response.....

16,925

umm i hope you realize that the 3.5L v6 in that car puts out over 280 hp and the car is lighter than the cobra. it also runs high 13s to low 14s for the 1/4 mile stock! i made short work of a stage 2 roush with an 03 enthusiasts edition and nismo chip and cold air intake. his $48k spent on his mustang didnt touch the $18k in the 350Z. i would put a 350z up against any GT anyday or even a cobra from 99-01 like you were saying. the brand new mustangs might beat it in the quarter barely but would get killed in any sort of race that required turning and braking

65

chris my man go look up the stats again for one try finding a nissan skyline for sale and second the 350z is pretty fast for a 6 cylinder is what im saying. and you keep mentioning the cobra like its the baddest mustang ever made well sorry for a supercharged v8 they should be puttin out way more then 320 hp it is comparalbe and the cobra wouldnt beat it by much at the strip if it did. Iv driven both and the 350 will get up and go while the cobra sits there and spins thats an advantage of a front wheel drive. line a 350z up with any stock mustang gt or cobra and the 350 will give it a run for its money. the 350 weights 300 lbs or more less then they do and have a way better suspension set up and mustangs arent geared for top speed like the 350z is the 350 would kill a mustang in balls the wall straight line speed unless the mustang is geared different then stock gears and tuned for it. and since your comparing a cobra instead of base model gt you gotta compare the cobra to 350z nismo and its not a comparison in strip road course or top speed. The only mustangs that u can compare with a 350z supra or any other import like that would be the saleens and shelbys

16,925

mike lets just let chris live in his dream world where he thinks the 350z is a slow car. then when he gets his mustang and thinks he can beat one he can lose his money and get embarrased as hell and we can just sit back and laugh at him for it

2,735

chris I for got to add something in my last response... There is one serious flaw your bringing up in your arguments... and i cannot stress this enough because it is so important. so ill use stars and stuff haha ***************** A RWD car loses way more % power than you are showing.... A closer estimate would be 15% most RWD cars that have been properley tested show a loss of 12%-18% for modern cars... older cars lost as much as 25% ***************** Its very important to understand these numbers... AWD cars loose as much as 20% there are of course a few exceptions where the drivetrains are extremily efficent but for general internet quibbling i usually say 10-14% FWD 12-18% RWD (15% MUSTANG) and 17-22% AWD ... The cobra models have been faster than the Z model from 2001 on... the 1999 cobra was close but it did not generate as much horsepower as advertised... so that was a close race... but strip wise ill agree with you... the 03 and 04 cobras were faster track wise because they were beasts and sported a IRS which helped a lot in the twisties... the 370 is quicker than the 2010 mustang GT in the quarter... but i think ford might be changing that big time next year... CHEERS!

16,925

i will agree with the cobras beating the 350z at the strip from 03 and 04 but even with the irs they still dont beat the Z on a track. Z brakes and handles better still while being only slightly less quick

2,735

well ive put a terminator around the track quicker than Zs... yeah there better in the corners but the 390 (cough cough yeah right ford haha...) just eats up the space inbetween the corners...

16,925

well in my eyes if youre going to compare the supercharged mustang you have to use the nismo edition Z too. nismo chip/exhaust/cold air intake. the mustang wont beat that Z. a regular Z i could see because the horsepower in the straight would pull just too far away but the nismo Z would scream down the straights too

2,735

well ive never seen a real nismo Z ive raced a few fakes from light to light or i assume they are fakes because i pulled a good deal on them ... i mean no unlisenced agressive tests of acceleration are illegal... and i meant the strip... yeah... lol

16,925

a real nismo makes over 300hp. i dont know a lot about them but im guessing they are also slightly lighter from performance parts and have a better brake system in them then the regualr Z too

2,735

so heres what ive dug up... 2007 350Z = 306hp 268ftlbs tq... 3188lb for the coupe... (previous years ranged from 286 to 300hp with similar drops in torque... weight change is negligable) so compare that to a terminator cobra and thats not much of a race... against a 96-2002 cobra it shoudl be a good road race but will still be a blowout on the strip... the NISMO 350Z that AMERICA recieved: 2004 R tune 305hp and no weight change (weight reduction cancled out by heavier aftermarket parts... also voided warranty...) 2005 not relevant to north american markets... but it recieved a slighht hp bump (296hp) a higher redline, suspension upgrade and a body kit... 2006 no official nismo product 2007-present: nismo 350z 313hp, higher redline... body kit, brembo brakes (smallish... 4piston 12.8inch front 2piston 12.7 rear) nismo wheels, 245/40WR18 front, 265/35WR19 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires, 380RS vq35hr stroked to 3.8l 350hp 293ftlbstq brembos, body kit, suspension upgrade and tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R tires (245/40R18 in front, 275/35R19 in the rear) weight increaces slightly so theres the real meal deal on the nismo...

2,735

1: nowhere did i find a sale price for a SHINODA anywhere near 1.8 million dollars... 2: i have never come across a regular production 302 TT that produced 1000hp shinoda product claimed or tested... 3: The Shinoda mustangs are hardly a stock mustang... these are modified vehicles just like roush and saleen... 4: have you figured out what year your mustang is and how many valves it has? how about how much horsepower it produced stock and what mods you have dreamed up to get it to whatever number you pulled out of thin air to tell us? Cheers...

45

I would have to say the upcoming 2010 Shelby GT500 and/or the 2008 GT500KR. Both of which produce 540 bhp right out of the box.

45

Another poster mentioned the BOSS 429 (personally, that's my favorite Mustang from "back in the day") with 375 bhp. That reminded me about the 1971 Ford Super Cobra Jet Mustang. That was also rated at 375 bhp, but most likely was much faster (similar to the BOSS). There is a nice example that I posted in white on the photos section, but here is another shot of it. VERY RARE!

35

You are correct my buddy dynoed his 03 convertible Cobra (stock) and got I believe 372HP at the wheels so that motor is making well over 390HP. Ad for the 4.6 in 96 they were rated 260hp but Ford overratedthe first ones. alot of those cars went back under a recall for echaust and header work. I have a 94 5.0 GT and it was rated 215HP 10 over the 93 Gt but my car is heaver. With a decent driver a stock Stang from the early 90's should run 14.5 sec quarter miles.

2,735

hey craig Yeah i cant find the dyno sheet or id post it here but i have a friend who had his 04 cobra put down 411 to the wheels on a mustang dyno... Its putting down about 800 now but we made that pull when it had about 14000 km on it and my god does it haul now... im sure the thing would breeze past 200mph if we put the tires and aero on it to make it do it safely... its disgusting fast... he runs a mid 9 second with it now... and 14.5 bone stock is pretty avg i guess.... With stickeys, a good launch (probabally a clutch swap... ) intake, exhaust, tune, and 101 mapping and a set of 3.73s you should be able to crack high 13s without too much trouble... there is a mountain of torque to be unleashed from the 4.6...

5

alex get off the mustang horsepower page if all your gunna talk about is rice burning imports. And quit making up fucking statistics and shit. V8 rear wheel drive is the only way to go!

35

To all comparing Mustangs with imports: Imports might handle and brake better than the Stang. But what would you rather do? Brake faster and sit in a Japanese rice takeout box and look like a complete idiot? Or embrace the displacement of a real road machine's V8 and truly own the highway. Yeah, that's right, my car was made in Detroit, not Yokohama or wherever the fuck. Because of that, I don't care how fast you can make it a Supra go. You can pour buckets of money into it but it will never be less ugly or unpatriotic to buy. This is the United States of America. If you lived/live in Japan, I would say go crazy with those domestic Japanese cars. But why anyone would put up with them over here is a true mystery. For most powerful stock Mustangs, I would go with the GT500KR.

345

the 03-04 cobra has 390hp net, which is 5 more than the 2000 cobra R. Those would be the highest from ford, excluding the brand new GT500 which has 500, or 540 with the GT500KR, but you'd need a cool $80,000 for one of those.

2,735

that seems quite misinformed then to me... there were mustangs from the muscle era that generated up to 500hp and they ought not be forgotten about. While the 0304 terminators would run circles around them today the question is about horsepower. To even mention the GT500s as side notes is also foolish they are the highest horsepower mustangs. For their era the terminator cobras were the highest horsepower mustangs but times have changed and theres a new king of the mustang hill...

345

misinformed? manufacturers back "in that era" measured horsepower in "gross" terms. most 300-400 hp cars only made 200+ to the wheels. also, inform me on what mustang was rated at 500hp besides (since you like that term better than excluding) the gt500 that ford made? i was simply mentioning other higher hp mustangs, but excluding the gt500 from my list since it is the highest, but rather unattainable to the average person given their price. oh by the way, nice 96 mustang, come get some!

1,255

hey Chris you're right about the torq thing and imports being good on the track but that's only! on the road courses. On the drag track American muscle rules! one thing to keep in mind though is that i am talking about cars that are stock, if anyone has a wackload of money then they can build and mod something that will blow the doors off other cars until some other guy builds something faster.

1,255

"DISCLAIMER" information and opinions posted on car iq are only such and is not meant to offend um let me see i think that is BULL SHIT, the ride on a RWD vehicle is so much more enjoying, when you step on the gas the weight shifts more to the rear wheels which are the drive wheels, there is more traction and handle weight more easily.

2,735

i think you had better read some of my posts here... i am a muscle car guy i talked about the nismo stuff to make sure no one is gonna post bullshit numbers about them... thats what they really are and thats what the sub-argument was about... im not a rice burner i eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner... i blew a integra off the line starting in third tonight... and ate some variant of skyline tonight although it was not a gtr of course the guy still figured his car was hot shit... and yes i subscribe to v8 rwd method of motoring. (although i gotta say i do like the V10 in the viper and gallardo...)

795

If you're going for something less expensive, I would go with the newer v6 Mustangs. I think this year was the year Ford's Mustang v6 broke the 300 horsepower marker. I'm pretty sure they have 315. Great car for a v6. Insurance is cheaper than a v8... Obviously

135

depending on the version of stock the newer mustangs V6 has approx 323 HP and the V8 has about 400-426HP, not sure on the specifics. i currently just bought a 2008 yes, used, but i will only purchase a style from 2005-2009. so i may be limited in HP of approx 300, but i went with something in my price range and something that i like that makes me think 60's mustang everytime i drive it,(because the S197 platform was a rebirth of the 64-69 mustang) but putting on a SLP Loudmouth exhaust muffler delete, makes this sounds like the good old days. i'm not going for HP but i'm going for something that is a mix of look, sounds and drive. but i say to each his/her own, youre free to choose what you like and think, and in this case, i'll hold on to Grimlock as long as i can.

5

Stock means just right out of the factory not sent to shelby, saleen, or roushwhich means in current straight from the ford factory with no mods from anyone would be the 5.0liter v8 mustang gt at 420hp

215

2013 Shelby GT500 With the arrival of the 2013 Shelby GT500, Ford delivered the V8 engine with the most horsepower ever produced in North America. The 5.8-liter, 32-valve supercharged aluminum beast produced a max 662 hp at 6,500 rpm and 631 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, which was enough to intimidate the majority of production land vehicles. rWhat do you think? The performance tests did not disappoint in the slightest. This Shelby blasted from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. In the quarter-mile run, the GT500 covered the ground in 11.6 seconds at 125.7 mph in Motor Trend tests.
