Why would the left axle shear off (while going down the highway) right behind the castle nut?

My '96 Corolla got a rebuilt tranny about 8 months ago.  Last night the axle sheared off.  I
was very lucky and did not end up in a ditch or worse.  When I took the wheel off to see
what the noise was all about, the nut with a stub of the axle fell out of the hubcap.  What
would cause this failure? The only thing that held the wheel on was the  brake caliber
assembly.

spinning on ice and hitting dry road in cold weather can fracture the hardened shaft, a scratch on tempered steel can shatter as glass if very cold, coil springs and torsion bars are notorious for such happing's although no one go,s farther than saying for some reason it snapped
