If it is hot and it needs coolant then yes. If you are purging the cooling system then yes you add as necessary. Otherwise if you are just topping it off in the reservoir, then no it does not have to run.

Very important to keep it running if it overheated. If you stop engine to add coolant while hot, you'll do some serious engine damage

yes, and add till full. be sure to pour till water spurts through bleeder brass bolt as pictured then tighten lightly. 2000-present model has this.
